the first “masahiko aoki award for economic paper”, jointly organized by the center for industrial development and environmental governance (cideg)at tsinghua university and comparative study, officially called for papers in july, 2017. until october 1, there were totally 36 high quality papers, of which 35 scholars were from japan, australia, hong kong, domestic universities and research institutes submitted papers. after more than 2 months of first round and second round review, the winner has come into being. on the morning of december 16, 2017, the award ceremony of “masahiko aoki award for economic paper” was held at the tuspark convention center.
the shortlist of the 1st “masahiko aoki award for economic paper” included 5 papers. one of the papers named “chinese small property: the co-evolution of law and social norms”, written by qiao shitong, assistant professor of university of hong kong, won the final award. the other four papers: “do college graduates serving as village officials help rural china?”, written by he guojun, wang shaoda, of which contributor is he guojun, assistant professor of hong kong university science & technology, “how chinese firms link with foreign markets”, written by sun xiaonan, senior researcher of asia growth research institute, “historical origin of disparities in regional economic development: a comparative historical analysis of jiangsu and zhejiang provinces”, written by liu mingxing, zhang dong, zhang qi, of which contributor is zhang dong, assistant professor of lingnan university of hong kong, “corporate governance of chinese privatized firms:evidence from a survey of non-listed enterprises", written by zhong ninghua, professor of tongji university, got the award nomination.

the contributors and authors of 5 papers were invited to the award ceremony. several members of cideg board of directors and academic committee, representatives of the review committee of the award attended the ceremony as well. the award ceremony was hosted by xue lan, dean and professor of the school of public policy and management of tsinghua university, director of cideg. mr. wu jinglian, chairman of cideg academic committee, chairman of the review committee, delivered opening remarks. the award ceremony invited barry naughton, professor of graduate school of international relations & pacific studies of university of california at san diego, hoshi takeo, professor of school of business of stanford university, hatta tatsuo, president of asian growth research institute and member of cideg academic committee, che jiahua, professor of china europe international business school to award certification of nomination award respectively. mr. wu jinglian personally awarded the author of winner paper a certification, and chen qingtai, chairman of cideg board awarded cash prize.

then, professor che jiahua delivered a speech as the representative of the review committee of the award. he spoke highly of the selected papers and hoped that the award would promote comparative institutional economics.

for the award ceremony of “masahiko aoki award for economic paper”, mrs. reiko aoki sent a congratulatory letter, which was read by professor hoshi takeo at the ceremony. in the letter, she expressed her sincere congratulations to the award-winning young scholars and conveyed that professor masahiko aoki always paid attention to the research of young scholars during his lifetime. mrs. aoki hopes that the new generation of scholars who won the award will be able to build up an updated economic theory with young vitality.

at last, professor hoshi takeo was invited to address closing remarks. he said it was very glad to see award –winning young scholars. he felt that it was very grateful to be a college with professor aoki. professor aoki not only studied japanese economy, but also made contributions to the economics and comparative institution analysis. professor hoshi hoped that young scholars could help the whole world economy through the study of china and china's economy.
